Pompeius (Magnus) (<a tabindex=40 href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompey" target="_blank" title=" Wikipedia article on Pompey the great">Pompey (the Great)</a>) in an arrangement of great political significance&#160;;&#160; although Pompey and Julia had a son, he did not survive.&#160; Julia died in 54&#160;<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">b.c.</span>, not only bringing the political alliance with Pompey to an end but also denying Caesar a direct heir.&#160; (Pompey himself was murdered in Egypt in 48.)</p> <p>Caesar died without male issue.&#160; <span style="color:green">By his will</span>, faithfully followed by the Senate, <span style="color:green">he adopted the promising young Octavian</span>, son of his niece Atia and <a tabindex=50 href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaius_Octavius" target="_blank" title=" Wikipedia article on Gaius Octavius, father of Augustus">C. Octavius</a>.</p> <p>In the last five years of his life, as dictator (a post he officially held intermittently, although his influence ran continuously), he managed to bring about the settlement of much discord throughout the empire but discontent with his rule simmered beneath the surface, particularly amongst opposing senators.&#160; His murder in March of 44&#160;<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">b.c.</span> left Rome and her empire rudderless.&#160; C. Matius, a noted friend of both Caesar and <a tabindex=60 href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicero" target="_blank" title="Wikipedia article on Marcus Tullius Cicero">Cicero</a>, asked at the time,  If Caesar, for all his genius, could not find a way out, then who shall&#160;? </p> <!-- END OF PAGE CONTENT --> </div> </body> </html>
